Livestock Guardian Dogs (LGDs) have been used for centuries to help guard other animals.
Many of these dogs aren’t good house pets. They bond with their charges as puppies.
They’re independent thinkers which allows them to make on-the-spot decisions regarding the animal they’re protecting and take their job seriously. When the flock is in danger they bark to intimidate the predator first and act aggressive. They fight only as a last resort. LGDs must be properly trained or you’ll be disappointed in their performance. Daily instruction and training is a must. Older dogs already trained help the puppies learn faster. It’s widely acknowledged that they aren’t reliable until they’re 2 yrs. old.
